The Amsler grid: central vision

Self-assessment for information only: it is not a screening, an examination or a medical opinion, it does not constitute a diagnosis and it does not replace an eye examination. A.N.P.I.G. is not responsible for decisions made on the basis of the results.

The Amsler grid checks central vision (the macula). Looking at the dot in the centre, you will answer four questions per eye about how you see the lines and squares — distortions, spots or missing areas are the signs we are looking for.

  • Hold the screen at 30–40 cm, reading distance.
  • Wear your reading glasses, if you use them.
  • ALWAYS look at the central dot: notice the rest of the grid without moving your gaze.
  • One eye at a time: cover the other with the palm of your hand, without pressing.

Before you begin

  • This is a self-assessment for information only: it is not a consultation, a screening, an examination or a medical device, and it does not provide a diagnosis.
  • The result depends on your screen, the light and the distance, and it may be inaccurate, even when it looks normal.
  • Your answers stay on this device: we do not receive them and we do not store them.
  • For any problem with your eyesight, or if a result worries you, see your eye doctor. A.N.P.I.G. is not responsible for decisions made on the basis of the results.
